5 Alternative Ways to Help You Get Pregnant

In this post I thought I would share my secret checklist of alternative methods of increasing fertility. All these are things I pursued to help me get pregnant and fall outside of the topics I have spoken on previously.

Checklist – things to help me get pregnant

1. Holistic – Fertility Related Herbs
There are 4 key herbs widely considered to encourage fertility.

False Unicorn Root
Chaste Tree Berry
Dong Quai
Wild Yam

One herb to avoid when is Ginseng; recent studies have proved this could be dangerous if taken whilst pregnant.

2. Something your partner can do to help
Of all the ways to get pregnant this is a little wacky, but believe it or not, science has proved that the hotter the testicles are the less sperm is produced. So ask hubby or BF to wear looser underwear, stay out of hot baths and avoid those leather pants!

3. Cutting out red meat
High protein diets are known to hinder fertility. By cutting out red meat you will reduce your protein intake and avoid animal fats which are generally no good for your health. Red meat does have a high concentration of iron, but this can be obtained from beans and pulses.

4. Over the counter drugs
Stop taking pain-killers or analgesics; these are known to negatively affect fertility. If you have a headache simply drink more water and have a lie down.

5. Plan ahead for ovulation
Have sex 2 days before your ovulation day. The male sperm can live inside your body for up to 4 days and will therefore be present in your body on your most fertile day if you plan ahead.

These 5 pointers are aspects often overlooked when it comes to traditional advice on conceiving, so feel free to share this list of ‘things to help me get pregnant’ with your friends

Help Me Get Pregnant – Priceless Dietary Advice

Wanting to get pregnant was a strain I endured for months on end and nearly took its toll on my marriage. As a 38 year old woman I felt like I might have missed the boat, but then I kept reading about various women having babies well into their forties. To help me get pregnant I implemented a number of dietary changes which I wanted to share with you today.

The Help Me to Get Pregnant Dietary Essentials

  1. Coffee and tea have been linked to low fertility, so go herbal. Jiaogulan tea is fantastic for your immune system and is branded the ‘immortality’ tea because of its anti-aging properties. Go for loose leaves as bags just don’t taste as nice.
  2. Any meats you eat should be organic and lean. Non-organic meats are full of growth hormones and antibiotics. Steer clear of fatty meats; stay with chicken and turkey where possible.
  3. Dairy should also be organic, as with meat there are growth hormones and antibiotics in non-organic produce.
  4. Fiber is essential for fertility; make sure you eat lots of fruit, whole grains and vegetables.
  5. Steer clear of animal fat but go for the good fats found in almonds, sunflower seeds and oily fish.
  6. Go brown. Switch white bread, white pasta and white rice for the wholegrain varieties.
  7. Flush out toxins with plenty of water – drink up to 8 glasses a day.
  8. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables – 6 portions a day where possible.

I understand how much wanting to get pregnant has become a part of your life, but stop focusing on ‘why can’t I get pregnant’ and follow the dietary advice above. It worked for me and it can work for you, too.

You Can Get Pregnant – The Importance of Sleep

That is no question, as long as there are no internal medically diagnosed complications you can get pregnant. Previously I have discussed changing my diet and my mental attitude, both of which I believe were major contributors to my healthy baby boy. But there was another aspect of my lifestyle I changed considerably related directly to health.

An Irregular Sleeping Routine Can Prevent Pregnancy

I used to be somewhat of a night owl, I never did sleep too well which arguably was linked to diet but also because I was a couch potato who loved watching movies until the small hours. On weekends I sometimes wouldn’t go to sleep until 3-4am, and during the week I struggled to get more than 5 hours sleep on a good night. To help me get pregnant I changed my sleeping routine completely. To do this I started going to bed at the same time and getting up at the same time (10pm-7am). Now initially this was difficult because it was taking me ages to drop off, but the important thing is to maintain the getting up time regardless of when you fall asleep. Soon enough you feel so tired come 10 o clock you drop off sweetly as soon as your head hits the pillow.

Sleep in-line with Your Natural Body Clock

You see, our natural sleeping rhythms are set to wake up with the sun and sleep soon after dark, yet in the modern day our sleeping pattern is all over the place and this negatively affects the other cycles in our body. I knew a healthy body was needed to help me get pregnant, so I adjusted my sleep to a healthy pattern just like my diet. Along with the dietary advice in my previous posts and a healthy sleep routine, it won’t be “I want to get pregnant”, it will be “I am pregnant”!

Folic Acid and Pregnancy

I know the feeling and it becomes an obsession, you sit around wondering ‘what can help me get pregnant‘. As women who long to have a child so desperately, and living within a society that constantly reminds us that the older we are the harder it is to conceive, it can be a worrying and often depressing time when it should be the happiest time of our lives.

Often women try to get pregnant by initiating sex with their partner at every opportunity, the more frustrated they become the more intensity and regularity they apply in the bedroom. This can takes its toll on your relationship, not to mention your partner! But take your mind off of sex for the moment, it is important to get your body in fine tuning to conceive before you start going at it like a rabbit. There is one vital ingredient your body needs plenty of, a vitamin that I became an addict of during my pregnancy quest – folic acid.

Can folic acid help me get pregnant?

Folic acid has long been cited as a catalyst in helping women get pregnant, and this is no old wives tale. Folic acid is a B vitamin also known as vitamin Bg. The body needs folate to synthesize DNA and for cell growth and repair. It also plays a vital role in producing red blood cells and combating anemia. It is essential to maintain high levels of folic acid in the body not only when you are trying to conceive, but also throughout your pregnancy.  A lack of folic acid in the body during pregnancy can cause disease and deformity in developing embryos.

Foods high in folic acid

Leafy vegetables are a great source of folic acid but be careful not to overcook them as you will destroy the folate content. Here are some foods you can start incorporating into your high folate diet.

  • Lettuce
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Asparagus
  • Cabbage
  • Papaya
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Oranges
  • Marmite
  • Egg Yolks
  • Wholemeal Bread
  • Jacket potato
  • Milk

Try to Get Pregnant Without Supplements

As you know, when I was trying for a baby I was fairly overweight. When I started to drastically change my diet some of my friends were encouraging me to relax a little and get down to the health store for dietary supplements instead. This was very bad advice indeed, how can you get pregnant if your body is full of toxins?

Vitamin Pills Can Act as Toxins

Confused? Don’t be. Shoving a plentitude of multi-vitamin pills down your neck everyday is bad news if your body doesn’t actually need them. If your doctor has specifically told you that you have a deficiency in a particular vitamin then by all means buy a pill supplement, but whatever you do, don’t continue eating rubbish and then trying to compensate with excessive vitamin tablets.

Our Ancestors Didn’t Take Multi-Vitamins

You can get pregnant by simply achieving a balance of vitamins and minerals from natural organic produce. Think about this for a moment, do you think our hunter-gatherer ancestors popped down to the local health store for vitamin pills? Come on now, it just isn’t natural – not to mention a big waste of money. Our ancestors were eating off the land; they ate natural, wholesome produce blessed by the sun and the earth.

Do Your Homework and Get Pregnant Faster

Unless you are medically proven to be deficient in a certain vitamin then start reading up on how you can obtain you vitamins and minerals naturally from fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts. These days, when somebody says to me, what can I do to get pregnant? I often reply, what would your great ancestors of done? You can try to get pregnant a hundred ways, but the key is to eat a natural, healthy and balanced diet.

Wanting to get pregnant – Changing Your Mindset Will Help You Conceive

As you know, to help me get pregnant I embarked on a mission to change my lifestyle completely. I was even pleading with God at one point, not that I am religious, I just wanted a child so badly, not only to give life and start a family, but through fear my husband might start to look elsewhere if I wasn’t capable. Wanting to get pregnant turns to desperation, and this has some very negative effects on the body. Stress and anxiety are the last things you want when you are trying to conceive, but I was at the end of my tether.

It wasn’t until my friend Juliet who is a life coach by profession pointed out that my negative energy caused by desperation was actually hindering my chances of becoming pregnant. She gave me two marvelous techniques to help let go of my frustration and harness a positive frame of mind to encourage my pregnancy.

Letting Go of Fear and Insecurity

Letting go of wanting to get pregnant is difficult when that is exactly what you want. But trying to force something natural is impossible. Juliet taught me to let go of the desperation and accept the current situation, which of course was subject to change. I had been trapping myself in a prison of failure which was actually stopping me from succeeding. So I let go and felt liberated, liberated enough to focus on my lifestyle change and make positive steps towards success. This meant no more lying around depressed or screaming at my husband “why can’t I get pregnant”. I just let it all go

Positive Visualization

For 10 minutes everyday I would positively visualize finding out I was pregnant, having a trouble free birth and becoming a family unit. This visualization time really harnessed positive energy and was a meditation to release my fear, worry and insecurity. Visualizing made it possible for me to believe in the reality.

I truly believe these two techniques contributed to help me get pregnant and have my beautiful baby boy.

Changing My Lifestyle To Help Me Get Pregnant

I would I have done anything to help me get pregnant, I was that desperate. My body clock had been ticking for many years but it was only when I hit 38 years old that my hubby and I were in a position to have a baby. I didn’t think conceiving would be a problem, but as time went by it became apparent that it wasn’t going to be easy.

Medical Help Wasn’t an Option

IVF wasn’t an option quite simply because of the expense, and before trying any such expensive treatment my local doctor asked me to look a little closer to home. To be frank, I was overweight and not very healthy. Junk food had become a habit and so had Friday nights accompanied by a bottle of wine. I was ruing my own chances of falling pregnant naturally by flooding my body with toxins in the form of preservatives, flavorings and alcohol.

Considering Another Life

Wanting to get pregnant was my goal and I wanted nothing more than a healthy baby. I wasn’t going to be eating for one, there was another life to consider – if changing my lifestyle might help me get pregnant then that’s what I was going to do. So I set about changing the habits of a lifetime. I started eating a healthy diet containing fruit and vegetables. I swapped sweets and cakes for nuts and seeds, I swapped alcohol for decaffeinated green tea and fry ups for oatmeal and orange juice.

Don’t get me wrong, this was no easy task. Changing my life so drastically was difficult and I even got ill with a bad cold early on as the toxins drained from my body. But alas, 2 months later, I wasn’t saying to my friends “why can’t I get pregnant”, I was saying, I can’t believe I am pregnant!
